Initially a medical student, he finally pursued his love for painting working with some of the great French Impressionists. Sadly, he was killed in the Franco-Prussian war at the young age of 31 having only painted for a few years.
Well, after lamenting the advent of abstract expressionism, I was thrilled to come across the show by Markus Lüpertz at the Hirshhorn in Washington DC that does not cast aside figurative painting entirely.
