The Office, Javier Arean, oil and charcoal on canvas, 2017This resonates so much with the previous painting I posted. Astutely composed, a restrained pallet and some wonderful brushwork. And that charcoal circle! Also in the Tamayo Painting Biennial in Mexico City. .#mexicanart #mexicanartmuseums #painting #watercolorpainting #watercolor #modernart #contemporaryart #museotamayo #latinamericanart #latinamericanartist #artgallery #expressionistart #mixedmedia #colombianartist #arteméxico #portrait #artemexicana #artecontemporanea #southamericanart #southamericanartists

The similar format of these two Hopper paintings from the VMFA magazine help us decipher his masterful creation of three-dimensional space and intrigue. First, in both pictures we have the headboard and doorway(1) that protrude into the canvas on the left and thrust the viewer intimately into the space. Next, our eye is drawn along the diagonal into the painting. In the upper painting, this is the edge of the mattress and the lower one, the stripe on the carpet. However, we are then stopped by the intervening diagonal(2) of the figure In the painting. In the upper picture, this is the predominant strong diagonal. In the lower picture the first stop is the woman on the right. But wait, there is more. If we follow the diagonal in the upper painting we arrive at a jumble of bags and belonging that gives us pause to consider: who is the subject, where is she traveling to(or what is she escaping from)? The same device is used in the lower painting where we are led to the second diagonal figure and to the standing man. Again, we stop to ask who the couple might be, what are they waiting for and what might their conversation be about? The vertical lines (3) subtly serve to bookend the energized space between (1) and (3). Lastly, there are the the flat planes at the “back” (4) that paradoxically provide both an impasse to “complete” the space that Hopper has created, and yet hint intriguingly of more to discover and explore beyond. In both cases there is the suggestion of light and activity beyond the scene presented, that keeps the narrative alive. Hopper was as masterful as Vermeer in creating and constructing space and capturing an ephemeral moment through the use of material objects and light.

Edward Hopper and the American Hotel explores Hopper in the context of the hospitality industry , his traveling, as well as design work for the hospitality industry. In the second image, what looks like a highly polished reflective piece of art is actually a room that you can stay in reconstructed from one of his paintings!.#expressionism #art #modernism#figurativeart #edwardhopper #modernistart #oilpaintings #artexhibition #artgalleries #modernart #oilpainting #artcontemporain #postwarart #contemporaryart #artgallery #americanartist #landcapeart #americanartmuseum #hopper #vmfa
